Hello, Friend.

Our area has been getting lots of rain lately, which our parched lawn has desperately needed. Everything was so crispy and brown when we returned from our East Coast trip that I wondered if it would ever recover.

The answer? Yes! All it took was several good soakings, and the lawn is lush and green again and our Mexican petunias (which I would've sworn two weeks ago were dead and gone) are full of vibrant blooms!

And, as if that weren't enough cause for rejoicing, the coming month offers even more reasons to celebrate, including the following family-friendly and fun September holidays.

Free resources for you this month:

  • Sept. 1 - World Letter Writing Daytake time to jot a few lines or send a card to a far-off friend or relative today to let them know you’re thinking of them
  • Sept. 6 - National Read a Book DayPick a title from one of the genres on our reading challenge.
  • Sept. 8 - National Pledge of Allegiance DayWe began every day at our homeschool co-op by reciting this pledge (and this one, too).
  • Sept. 14 - National Coloring Daycelebrate this September holiday by downloading some of our free printable coloring pages or buying one of my coloring books
  • Sept. 16 - National Guacamole Day - prepare a big bowl of our savor-it-slowly guacamole to serve with tortilla chips and pico de gallo
  • Sept. 17 - Constitution DayIf you’ve never memorized the Preamble to the Constitution, today would be a great day to do it (or review it)!
  • Sept. 26 - National Better Breakfast DayYou’ll find lots of great recipes and quick breakfast ideas in this post (plus even more in the comment section)

What I'm reading this week:

For the past few weeks, I've been working my way through Jordan Peterson's 411-page tome, 12 Rules for Life. I really enjoy hearing Peterson speak. He is thoughtful, articulate, gracious, and communicates in a way that is rife with common sense and is accessible to intellectuals and laymen alike.

While well-written and thought-provoking, his book is heavy on theory and will likely prove dry to all but his most ardent fans. It's also written from a strong evolutionary perspective and devotes as much discussion to mythology and Eastern religious beliefs as it does to traditional Christianity.

It has been over five years since Peterson penned this book. A lot has happened to him in the interim, a fact to which he often alludes when speaking. So, while I would definitely recommend watching some of his interviews (a couple of my favorites are this one and this one), I don't necessarily recommend his book, unless you love reading cerebral works that require a significant amount of concentration to follow -- and you're especially good at eating the meat and spitting out the bones.

What we're eating this week:

The weather's a bit cooler, so I drug out my pressure cooker and prepared a big batch of potato corn chowder (which is basically this recipe with 2 cups of frozen corn thrown in for good measure).

Progress on last week's goals:

We ✅ got our passport stamp at the Texas State Capitol then ✅ visited my son in San Antonio where I ✅ painted a verse on their dining room wall, and we all ✅ made fun family memories on the Riverwalk. I ❌ haven't even touched my mother's dust ruffle, but I did ✅ begin registering our family's creative arts entries online (today's the deadline, so I'll have to finish that task before bedtime tonight)!

My goals for next week:

  • finish registering the crafts, then frame all the artwork for display
  • attend our homeschool kickoff
  • buy or build some shelves for coat closet
  • attend to the stack of mending (including Mom's dust ruffle) that's been mounting since our move

Another poll for you this week:

I saw a few votes for cheesecake, carrot cake, fantasy fudge, and peach cobbler last week, but if they were limited to just one dessert for the rest of their life, the overwhelming majority (about 80%) of my readers would choose... ice cream!

This week's pressing question: When eating ice cream (or soup or cereal), do you prefer to use a big spoon or a little one (tablespoon or teaspoon)? Hit reply and let me know!
